| Participants will spend a week learning about material science and engineering and careers in the field. Activities include group projects, visits to labs and local industries, guest presentations and a design-build contest. Past projects have included microelectronic circuitry, friction-stir welding, ceramic magnets, metal casting, glass processing, heat treatment and mechanical property evaluation, plasma-spray deposition and others. |

| Astro Science Workshop (ASW) |

| The ASW began 40 years ago during the space-race with the goal of encouraging young minds to pursue careers in science. This is a challenging program for students who have demonstrated exceptional interest and aptitude in astronomy and related science. Students work hands-on with telescopes and real data, and will contribute to our knowledge of the solar system. They will spend seven hours a day (Monday-Friday) in the program. |
| Eligibility Requirements: Students entering grades 10 or 11 who have completed one year of algebra are eligible. Students with exceptional interest and ability in astronomy and related sciences are encouraged to apply. |

| This is an academic, four-week residential program for talented students in grades 8 through 12. The COSMOS courses focus on topics not taught in high school, such as astronomy, computer science, ecology, robotics, neuroscience and more. The program creates a community of students who participate in an intensive academic experience delivered by distinguished educators and is available in four locations: Irvine, CA, Davis, CA, Santa Cruz, CA and San Diego, CA. |

| Charting the Natural World: Marine Biology Meets Math |

| Students in this program will explore and explain the aquatic environment using integrated math and biology. In the science classroom, marine biology will be used as a model for investigating ecosystems, energy and nutrient cycles, evolution, anatomy and physiology. In the math classroom, students will use the fundamentals of algebra and statistics to describe the natural world. Water samples will be collected from local tide pools then brought back to campus to be analyzed with state-of-the-art lab equipment and facilities. |
