Acadia Institute of Oceanography (AIO) Topic(s): Marine Biology

Marine Science Camp

Seal Harbor, ME Grade(s): 6 to 8, 9 to 10, 11 to 12
Based on the beautiful and dramatic coast of Maine, AIO takes advantage of everything nature has to offer. In two-week sessions, students attend special lectures and mini-seminars on topics in oceanography and participate in hands-on field research and activities. Prior oceanographic experience is not required for enrollment.
Eligibility Requirements: Students age 12 to 19 are welcome to apply. Basic sessions are for students age 12 to 15; advanced sessions are for students age 15 to 19.
Dates: Basic Session 1 (June 22-July 5); Basic Session 2 (July 20-August 2); Advanced Session 1 (July 6-19); Advanced Session 2 (August 3-16) Fees: $1,995 (limited financial assistance may be available)

Adler Planetarium Topic(s): Astronomy

Astro Science Workshop (ASW)

Chicago, IL Grade(s): 9 to 10, 11 to 12
The ASW began 40 years ago during the space-race with the goal of encouraging young minds to pursue careers in science. This is a challenging program for students who have demonstrated exceptional interest and aptitude in astronomy and related science. Students work hands-on with telescopes and real data, and will contribute to our knowledge of the solar system. They will spend seven hours a day (Monday-Friday) in the program.
Eligibility Requirements: Students entering grades 10 or 11 who have completed one year of algebra are eligible. Students with exceptional interest and ability in astronomy and related sciences are encouraged to apply.

Adler Planetarium Topic(s): Astronomy

Teen Volunteer Program

Chicago, IL Grade(s): 9 to 10, 11 to 12
Student volunteers provide educational activities for visitors to the planetarium through tours, demonstrations, experiments, storytelling and costumed characters. Volunteers learn about space science and share knowledge with visitors while fulfilling their service-learning requirements. Participants will also conduct scientific demonstrations, take part in crafts and other hands-on activities related to astronomy, answer questions and explain ideas presented in the exhibits to visitors.
Eligibility Requirements: Students over age 15 who enjoy working with the public and are interested in learning about science, particularly astronomy, are welcome to apply.

Summer High School Research Program

The American Cancer Society, Illinois Division offers an integrated Summer Research Program designed for high school students in their junior year (class of 2009). The major objective of the program is to introduce students to scientific research, specifically cancer research, to promote career opportunities in the area of cancer, through a program supervised by the American Cancer Society, Illinois Division's Research Advisory Committee. This program will help students develop their own philosophy on biophysics, biochemistry, immunology, and pharmacology, as well as gain an understanding of cancer and its impact on Illinois residents.
Eligibility Requirements: Students in the 11th grade

Service Learning Days

The Anti-Cruelty Society's Service Learning Days program offers volunteer opportunities that require only a single-day commitment, from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm, during which students work with animals and learn about the function of an animal shelter by participating in small projects. Volunteers earn five community-service hours. Students may attend two days per year.

The Anti-Cruelty Society offers a four- and six-week volunteer program for students interested in meeting and working directly with animals. Two sessions run during the summer, one for younger students ages 12 to 13, and one for older students ages 14-17. Spaces fill quickly.

Argonne National Labs Topic(s): Multiple Focus

Pre-College Research Participation Program

Argonne, IL Grade(s): 12+
This is an eight-week program in which college-bound students participate in laboratory research under the direction of Argonne scientists. Students will be selected by Argonne scientists and engineers who will provide research experience in areas such as biology, chemistry, computer science, engineering, environmental science, materials science, mathematics and physics.
Eligibility Requirements: Graduating 12th graders who have a GPA of at least 3.75 on a 4.0 scale, are Illinois residents, are U.S. citizens or permanent residents, and are enrolled to attend college in the fall of 2008 are eligible.

College of Architecture and Planning Summer Workshop

This workshop is an intensive immersion in environmental design and problem solving. CAP faculty members provide a series of exercises that challenge the young mind and its understanding of the built environment. Exercises are designed to encourage exploration and creativity.

Program in Mathematics for Young Scientists (PROMYS)

Boston, MA Grade(s): 9 to 10, 11 to 12
PROMYS encourages high school students to explore the creative world of mathematics. Students from around the country gather on the campus of Boston University for six weeks of rigorous mathematical activity and challenging problems in number theory. Students are advised by resident assistant counselors who have just graduated high school, as well as college-age counselors who are embarking on their own mathematical careers at some of the nation's finest universities.
