This month’s Mentor of the Moment is Steve Shaheen. After seeing our call to create an intentional impact in our communities, Steve was inspired by PE’s mission to serve underrepresented youth in Chicago to volunteer. As a pipeline engineer at BP, Steve brought his expertise to our virtual STEAM Summer Camp, leading students through a pipeline building activity focused on air pressure. Our own staff reflected on the program visit, “He was amazing. I even learned something!” Steve epitomizes the lifelong learner and creative STEM spirit that we work to hone in our students. Thank you, Steve!

Interested in following in Steve’s footsteps? Volunteer with PE! In the upcoming months, volunteers can become STEM Mentors with students, create Program Content around their area of expertise, or share any other special skills they have with our team. This fall, PE has weekly opportunities to volunteer in programs via Zoom or connect with us at our socially distanced STEMBus events. If you are interested in volunteering, fill out this form at, or check out our website to learn more.
