Family Comes First
Project Exploration (PE) creates transformative STEM learning opportunities for youth underrepresented in the sciences –particularly students of color and girls — by reducing or removing barriers to STEM education and career possibilities. And, we didn’t let a global pandemic stop us from achieving our goals. Family is first here at Project Exploration, and we demonstrated this by caring for our families, connecting them with food, technology, the internet, and more.
PE believes in family and community engagement. Our team reached out to over 700 families throughout the pandemic. If our families couldn’t come to us, we made it out to them as we delivered STEMboxes and other resources to our communities and ensured that we stayed connected.
On the Road With Summer Outreach
This summer, we launched our STEMbus partnered with Aries Charter Transportation; it allowed us to travel across the West and Southside of Chicago. Our STEMbus outreach events enabled PE to reach new students in local, predominantly black and Latino communities who might otherwise not have known about PE and opportunities in STEM. Fun, hands-on activities and giveaways opened up a new world of opportunities for young people right in the neighborhoods where they lived.
Project Exploration celebrated the end of summer with a drive-in movie celebration, in partnership with the 15th District Caps, Westside NAACP, Father Who Cares, the Laura B. Collins Community Development Center, Family Guidance Centers Inc., and many others. Our students, as well as people in the surrounding communities, joined us to enjoy Hidden Figures. The event was sponsored by Counting on Chicago Coalition.
Full STEM Ahead
Project Exploration is going full STEM ahead into the fall and will continue in its commitment to connect with families and communities throughout the Chicagoland area.
